Couple and dogs fall down Letchworth gorge

No one was hurt after two people fell at Hogsback Overlook

MT. MORRIS, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - A Buffalo couple and their two dogs had to be rescued at the Hogsback Overlook in Letchworth State Park Sunday.

The State Park Police along with Cuylerville and Mt. Morris Fire Departments conducted a successful rope rescue Sunday evening. They say the couple had been walking with their dogs when the dogs ran off around 4:50 p.m.

After a chase, all four ended up falling. One of the people were able to make it back up.

"It was determined that the other person and their two dogs were about half-way down the 400-foot Letchworth State Park gorge in an area where the gorge is extremely steep and wooded for approximately 200 feet before it transitions to a sheer vertical shale wall several hundred feet to the bottom," wrote Lt. James Hy in a news release.

Firefighters brought in portable lighting and a helicopter was used to assist with the rescue. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident.

Lt. Hy adds, "The State Park Police remind all visitors to stay on designated trails when hiking our unique and scenic State Park System and to protect pets by following the leash law in effect."
