‘Cooking with the Calamari Sisters' to serve up laughs, food at the JCC

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC-TV) - "Cooking with the Calamari Sisters... Mangia Italiano!" begins its run at the JCC CenterStage this Thursday, October 5 in Brighton.

The Calamari Sisters creator Jay Falzone and JCC CenterStage Artistic Director Ralph Meranto discussed the popular production Tuesday during News 8 at Noon.

The Calamari Sisters made their debut in 2010. "Everybody wants to be their friend," said Falzone. "They're the underdog and they just have this very enchanting way about them with all of their craziness, and people relate to them and they have invited the girls over for dinner before, audience members."

"Mangia Italiano!" follows a similar look of the Calamari Sisters previous shows. "They're doing a typical public access cable cooking show and they're doing three courses - the antipasto, they're doing another dish and they're doing a dessert!" Falzone explained. "There's a lot of craziness, singing and dancing. Well that's the whole gimmick is singing, dancing and cooking, but also there's a lot of audience participation, there's a few surprises that weren't in the production when it was here back in 2010."

Meranto said you never truly know what's going to happen with the Calamari Sisters. "Audience members get to come up on stage and taste the food. Things go wherever that particular audience member takes it. It's just crazy fun!"

It's a show for everyone, not just Italians. "The JCC is the Jewish Community Center and here we have these Italian women coming in and cooking for us!" noted Meranto. "The first time we worked with them was when they approached us about a show called 'Oy Vey! It's the Calamari Sisters' which blended the two worlds. But what's so cool about these girls is that everybody can relate to them. We all have family members like them. We all are sometimes like them in many ways. And it's like a Thanksgiving dinner every show. It's just so much fun. The family comes together. People laugh, they sing, they dance. It's just a crazy fun time."

Performances run October 5-29.
