Community leaders highlight need for funding to prevent child abuse

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Faith leaders, area pediatric physicians, parents and child advocates joined forces Monday to address funding for evidence-based programming to prevent child abuse.

Leaders stressed that investing in children's lives early on can prevent more serious problems in the future. They also called on Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo to do more to protect children.

"Since 2014, $1.7 Million has been cut from child abuse preventative programing such as Parents as Teachers and family therapy,” said The Children’s Agenda Policy and Advocacy Director Brigit Hurley. “During the same time frame, there has been a significant increase in CPS reports in Monroe County.”

Dinolfo is expected to reveal the 2018 county budget Tuesday, which will then be voted on by the legislature in December.
