Clyde Fire Department responds to large fire at laundromat

Crews were called to a fire at the laundromat on Columbia Street

CLYDE, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - The Clyde Fire Department was called to a fire inside the laundromat on Columbia Street in the Village of Clyde Wednesday evening.

Over 100 firefighters from 12 fire districts responded to the scene to assist the Clyde Fire Department.

Firefighters say the fire began around 6:00 p.m. and was controlled in just over an hour. Crews remain on scene, continuing to extinguish smoke.

According to the Clyde Fire Chief, firefighters had to battle the fire from outside the building due to building design, which is why it took crews so long to get the fire under control.

The Clyde Fire Chief says the laundromat is a total loss. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the buildings next door. Those buildings did suffer water damage from the rescue. They plan to reopen in a few weeks.

The laundromat is the only laundromat in the Village of Clyde and is described as a staple in Clyde for decades.
