Christians observe Ash Wednesday

PENFIELD, NY (WROC) - Aside from Valentine’s Day, Wednesday is also Ash Wednesday, the day marking the beginning of Lent for worshippers in many Christian denominations.

Christians observe the season by giving up something for the 40 days leading up to Easter.

Parishioners at Saint Joseph's in Penfield received ashes this morning. For the first time since 1945, Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day fall on the same day.

Rev. Jim Schwartz says, "In some sense it doesn't seem to mesh together, but I think in the deepest spiritual sense there is a great connection between Ash Wednesday and Valentine's celebration of love because at the end of the day, we are seeking to encounter God in the Lenten season and our God is a God of love."

Ash Wednesday masses in the area will continue into this evening.
