7 Rochester-area men among 42 arrested in illegal bird-fighting ring

TOWN OF FRANKFORT, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - New York State Police say they have busted an illegal bird fighting ring in Herkimer County following a six-month long investigation.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of 42 people following the execution of search warrants on Saturday.

Police say they seized approximately 55 game birds and over $68,000 in cash from a barn in Frankfort. An adjacent barn was also searched, and police say they seized another 180 birds. All game birds were turned over to the Herkimer County Humane Society at the scene.

Each individual is facing various charges including engaging in animal fighting, a felony, spectating animal fighting, a misdemeanor, and other drug charges.

Seven people from the Rochester area are charged with engaging in animal fighting for amusement: 

  • 54-year-old Marcelino Cintra, of Rochester
  • 42-year-old Eider Diaz, of Rochester
  • 61-year-old Eixton Flores, of Rochester
  • 32-year-old Yordanis Plaza-Lopez, of Rochester
  • 52-year-old Angel Rivera, of Fairport
  • 63-year-old Ramon Rivera, of Rochester
  • 40-year-old Jose Torres, of Rochester

Plaza-Lopez was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance for possessing over 100 grams of suspected heroin. He was arraigned in the Town of Frankfort Court on both charges and remanded to Herkimer County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash/$200,000 bail bond.

All other defendants were processed at the Herkimer State Police Barracks and released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Frankfort Court on July 11.
