6-year-old boy returns home from hospital after open heart surgery

WYOMING, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Cheers, laughter, bubbles and smiles filled the hallway Tuesday at Golisano’s Children's Hospital: Six-year-old Roger Logsdon was finally able to go home.

Roger has a rare condition called Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome.

When the chambers, valves and related blood vessels on the right side of the heart underdevelopment, he had to go through three stages of open heart surgery.

He was able to bypass the initial stage at birth, but had his first heart surgery at just two months old.

This past August he went for his second surgery but according to his mother, Dawn Logsdon, it didn't go as planned.

“He ended up with on dialysis at one point for a week. He had another surgery on his lung to take care of one of the complications of fluid in his chest and then he was so week from all the procedures that he ended up incubated just before Christmas for a month,” said Logsdon.

After a long road of recovery Roger was cleared to leave the hospital. He was also granted a wish from the Make a Wish Foundation. He chose a visit with WWE Wrestler Roman Reigns.

Logsdon says her wish already came true.

“It’s pretty cool to see all those people blowing bubbles for you and everything, it’s kind of shocking to see how many hearts he's touched,” said Logsdon.

Due to complications from the surgery, which by the way only 10 percent of the kids who have this surgery face, Roger will need a heart transplant at some point in the future.

A benefit will be held on April 22 for the family to help with the future expenses of the surgery. It will be hosted at the QWL building on 639 Exchange Street Rd in Attica.  It will feature basket raffles, food and a live band.

The time has yet to be determined.
