Howie Hawkins said he believes the state's fiscal crisis is due to politics, not economics. He said the major party politicians are working for the financial firms that fund their parties, and not for the citizens of the state.
As for the hot topic in Rochester, mayoral control of city schools, Hawkins said he's against it.
"There's no popular movement for mayoral control. This is coming from corporate interests that want to tap public revenues for their private profits," said Hawkins.
Hawkins ran for mayor of Syracuse in 2005. In 2006 he ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate.
Hawkins is a former Marine and has been nominated by the Green Party to run for office several times.
