Last Day For Healthcare Signup

Monday is the last day to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

The deadline was last Monday but it was extended to accommodate late-comers and it worked. In New York State, nearly 100,000 people have signed up in the last week alone. Navigators are helping people fill out their applications. The state says more than 70% of people who signed up didn't have insurance. They say many who did have coverage are finding out they qualify for deep discounts.

Curtis Luster is one of dozens of people rushing to beat the deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

"I'm a procrastinator at heart," Luster said.

Luster, who's between jobs has an expensive "COBRA" insurance plan. He's hoping to save some cash by choosing a plan through the healthcare exchange. Navigator Shannon Kelly is helping him sort through all the options.

"I figured let me get with someone that already knows the process, knows what needs to be done," Luster said.

Navigators working with Monroe County's Library System enrolled 117 households and 293 individuals. They have had a busy few days as the deadline approaches.

"I want to say probably 50 people which is probably a fourth of my total number of people that I've met with I've been trying to accommodate people because I know that schedules are difficult," Shannon Kelly of Trillium Health said.

Statewide, 812,033 people have signed up through the exchange and 414,736 people were eligible for medicaid and signed up. Of those people, 367,736 people signed up for private insurance. According to the latest numbers, 72% got financial assistance.

"The price of the health insurance is based completely on your income so people have been pleasantly surprised when they see that with the subsidies and cost sharing reductions that the price of their insurance is a lot more affordable than say COBRA," Kelly said.

Luster's insurance should kick in on May 1 and he's looking forward to the savings.

If you missed the deadline you may still be able to sign up if you took steps to enroll before Monday, but weren't able to because of computer glitches.
