Thousands of cars a day use this bridge over Interstate 390 and the Erie Canal. For many it is a gateway to the University of Rochester campus and it's medical center. "I'll be late to wherever my route I'm going to." Motorists like Derell Jackson will have to find another way to get to where they're going. Detour signs will direct them to Route 15 or Mount Hop Avenue, Elmwood Ave and East River Road. "I have to find a new route to take. Leave my house earlier. A little earlier. 15 to 20 minutes earlier." The D-O-T admits it is an inconvenience but it is part of on going improvements that will in the end provide a new on ramp from congested Kendrick Road onto I-390. "Once this bridge is open, sometime in mid to late August, probably, traffic from the University of Rochester will be able to come up here onto Kendrick Road and turn right onto the Expressway here on 390 and go north up towards the airport. That opportunity has never existed before. And it's going to be a huge benefit." Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to continue to use the open sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. Keith and Penny Gause use the adjacent walking trail. They're looking forward to the improvements. "I'm sure it will impact the people coming over from Henrietta and the people who use it coming from the city this way. I'm sure it'll be an affect on them, but they'll have to definitely take trails, if not. But the people who drive will have to go around the other way, which I'm sure will be a longer distance for them." The D-O-T says there will also be some short-term land closures on I-390 but the expressway will remain open in both directions. Amy Young News 8
