It's a new program based upon a successful model. "That's the beauty of putting together a program working with employers, is we can deliver exactly what they need and that's what we've done here," said FLCC Director of Workforce Development Lynn Freid.
It's called the Mechatronic Training Program. Students will study at the Technical Career Training Institute (TCTI) in Victor. "I wouldn't be surprised if students coming out of this program will have offers from multiple companies and they'll be certainly well prepared to go into jobs in those different companies," said G.W. Lisk Training Manager Dave Phillips.
G.W. Lisk, Surmotech and New Scale Technologies are among the companies working with FLCC. All three have struggled to fill positions requiring advanced manufacturing skills. "There ARE manufacturing jobs and we need high precision operators that can add value to our products and they can make good benefits and wages," said New Scale Technologies Vice President of Operations and Finance Allison Leet.
The coursework incorporates two aspects. In the classroom students receive the required academics, including industry specific math and blueprint reading. Where the advanced training machines are housed students learn the skills that will translate directly into the workforce. "As the technology keeps advancing you find yourself getting further and further away, that you need these programs to help bring the people, get the technicians and skill sets you need," said Surmotech Chief Financial Officer Jeff Thaler.
The 12 week training program costs $4,000 and begins in September. Fifteen students will be selected after an orientation and screening process. "They're coming in, they've got some experience at it, they know what to expect and hopefully they'll be long term employees," said Surmotech President Susan Horne.
The final mandatory orientation class is Wednesday, August 6 at the FLCC Victor Campus Center, 200 Victor Heights Parkway (Route 251) in Victor. To make a reservation contact FLCC at (585) 785-1906.
