Girl Scouts focus on STEM

- The Girl Scouts of Western New York will encourage girls to embrace STEM at its Women of Distinction Leadership Breakfast on September 19 in Rochester.

Girl Scouts of Western New York CEO Cindy Odom discussed the event Tuesday on News 8 at Noon.

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) are subjects girls are resisting.  Currently, only 25 percent of STEM jobs are occupied by women, yet experts predict by 2018 nine of the 10 fastest growing jobs will be STEM related.

Ainissa Ramirez, Ph.D., is a former Yale University Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a science evangelist with a strong belief in the importance of STEM education.  She will serve as the featured speaker during the Women of Distinction Leadership Breakfast.

The event is set for September 19 at 8:00 a.m. at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.  It is open to adults and girls to embrace Dr. Ramirez's message that STEM education can be fun and beneficial.
