Mary Jones, the Make-A-Wish Rochester Regional Development Director, and Kim Winter, who's son Craig was a wish recipient last August, discussed the gala and its importance Monday on News 8 at Noon.
Winter, of Pittsford, had her son Craig on her lap during the interview. The three year old is diagnosed with brain and spinal cord cancer. Winter said Make-A-Wish went above and beyond her expectations when Craig was granted a fire station playhouse last summer. The entire Pittsford Fire Department helped Craig enjoy his special day.
Jones said Make-A-Wish's ability to grant wishes like Craig's is based upon the generosity of people who donate to the foundation. Make-A-Wish does not receive state for federal funds, so every dollar donated is vital. Jones said each wish costs, on average, about $7,500 - and that figure is rising.
The "Evening of Wishes" Gala is the organization's largest local fundraiser. All of the proceeds raised will stay local to help wishes come true. The gala will feature silent and live auctions, dinner, dancing and a special message from wish recipient Brittany Cognata, the sister of wish child Blake Cognata.
