Eastman House Curator of Photography Lisa Hostetler discussed the new exhibition Wednesday on News 8 at Noon.
Mickalene Thomas: Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman will be presented in a 1970s styled installation within the Eastman House. In the exhibition, Thomas demonstrates her ongoing engagement with portraiture as a key to personal and cultural identity. Using her mother, former fashion model Sandra Bush, as her muse for the last decade, Thomas creates images that layer personal history with art history, revealing the complex role of the mother-daughter bond for each woman's sense of self.
The exhibition will be on view in the George Eastman House Museum's Entrance Gallery through October 19.
Mickalene Thomas: Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman will open to the public at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 20. At Noon, Thomas and Hostetler will host a conversation about the exhibition in the Entrance Gallery.
