"Tree Campus USA is really a testament to the University's commitment to the tree population," said Dan Schied, who manages Horticulture and Grounds for the U of R.
The honor means the school met five standards, all geared towards protecting trees, and teaching students about tree conservation. "Trees give really a sense to the students of being home, and obviously naturally from a sustainability sentiment. We think about carbon footprint, and how important they are for our environment," added Schied.
One of the trees that really stands out is a golden raintree. "At least 10 times a year I see students under that tree and sitting under it playing guitar, so i think they provide a sense of home to our students," said Schied.
The trees serve as reminders of home…with roots that run deep.
"In the late 1800's, Rochester was really a mecca for horticulture in the whole country," Schied added.
The U of R River Campus has 1400 trees with 116 different species.
