Canandaigua Academy senior Katelynn Jacobson freely admits, she gets very nervous before big performances. But you'd never know it! Katelynn is an accomplished singer, and she's in this week's Scholastic Arts Spotlight.
This is the rehearsal for the spring musical at Canandaigua Academy. Up there playing the starring role in Thoroughly Modern Millie is thoroughly wonderful Katie Jacobson. Getting the lead was a dream come true.
"That was just really cool for me."
Katie's a standout in her school's many ensemble groups....including the madrigal choir. This year, she was selected to be part of the all state women's chorus.
But she sings solo too.
"With solo you can let loose and do whatever your voice wants to do," says Katelynn.
"She also will be the first person to say we need to get going and make sure we work very hard on this, so we can have the best performance possible, so she's inspiring to the other students as well as being a great musician herself," says Amy Story , the Vocal Director at Canandaigua Academy.
"I trained classically as a singer but Millie is more of a belter and that's not something I'm used to doing so listening to jazz and show tunes has helped me branch out," says Katelynn.
Katy will attend college at Brigham Young University. She wants to study music education.
"To give the best gift I can give to other people and maybe inspire them to like music. Being a successful chorus teacher would be really cool."
