For the first time in 9 years, a group of Fairport students have a chance to be the next Odyssey of the Mind world champions.

Northside Elementary School's Odyssey of the Mind team came in second during the state championships earlier this month. They did it by building a structure out of balsa wood and glue that ultimately supported over 200 pounds.

They're heading to Iowa State University at the end of May for the world championships, but the kids say that for them, the competition is all about friendship.

"We're just like a family," team member Leo Allen said, "We get together so much and we have so much fun together."

"It's going to be really cool because we get to meet people from all over the world and trade pins and we get to get one team from another country to hang out with," team member Alex Moczarski said.

The Fairport PTA sponsors the team, but they don't have enough money for this trip. Click here to visit their fundraising page.
