Many of us pay bills and do taxes online. But to stand up and be counted, we have to reach for a pen. The Census says all you have to do is answer 10 questions. That will take just 10 minutes.
But in 2020, it may be much faster because you might not have to write your answers down. A report just released says the Census Bureau should seriously consider going digital.
The Census cost taxpayers $15 billion. That includes sending out 425,000,000 pieces of mail. Why so much? The Bureau says each piece of mail reminds you to fill out the form. The more people fill out the form, the less money to be spent on sending a representative to your house.
According to the report, moving to digital could save money and skirt the financially strapped Postal Service.
If you log on to the Census website , it shows the Bureau is looking to move to digital, just not yet. But right now, you can ge ta glance at the paper form you'll get next week.
