While the bicycle is a great mode of transportation, it's also a fun way to get your kid out and about and exercising.
"I think a lot of parents are understanding that they have to get them outside as well, and bikes are a really easy way to do that," said Scott Likly, the owner of Towpath Bike in Pittsford.
Biking is also a great way to get a more uncoordinated kid active.
"The nice thing about bike riding is that it's relatively easy for them once they've mastered the skill to go do it, and feel very satisfied with the experience without having a ball skill," said Likly.
Shopping for the perfect bike? A bike shop is your best bet, for a number reasons.
"They make sure the bike works perfectly, and they won't have problems with it, and its a safety issue with kids," said Likly.
Also, don't get hung up on all the frills that kids bikes can offer. You want the bike that's right for your kid - nothing more, nothing less.
"A lot of folks get caught up in numbers of gears and lots of dual suspension mountain bikes are sold for young kids. That really doesn't matter. Simple is better."
