Rochester school board member Van White said he is optimistic about Superintendent Bolgen Vargas's plan to allow local colleges to run some schools.

"We're losing students every day to charter schools, to private schools and that's because people don't have the confidence in the district," White said. "Whenever you bring a brand like an area college, like the U of R or Brockport...and you bring that brand to the district, you would think it make people gravitate toward it."

The idea is untested in Rochester.

"I don't think it's an experiment, to have educators, leaders come into the high school setting...that's a win-win," said White, who is assuming the colleges would pave the way for city students to attend their institutions after graduating.

When asked if Vargas is doing a good job as superintendent, White said he's pleased Vargas ended early dismissal on Wednesdays and is making a personal effort to get kids to class. But White added, "The verdict is not out yet."
