Ronald McDonald got a call at his Irondequoit home a few Saturdays ago while he was watching basketball. It was from a casting company in Los Angeles. They wanted the quality assurance technician at a local factory to appear in a "documentary about people with iconic names."
McDonald Googled the company and determined it was legitimate. A few days later, they flew him out to Los Angeles, picked him up in a limo and put him up in a Sunset Boulevard hotel.
The next day, he went to the set. There were limos lined up, each with a man named Ronald McDonald inside.
"All us Ronalds meet and they take us off to a dressing trailer and go through the clothes we brought and say, 'This is what we want you to wear,'" McDonald said.
Then the men found out the "documentary" was really a commercial.
"We go up to the studio and lo and behold sitting there is a set of Taco Bell tables and the director says, 'Okay guys, this is why you're here. We want to use you to make commercials for Taco Bell,'" mcDonald said. "I said you're kidding me. Me, Ronald McDonald from Rochester, New York? I'll give it a shot."
McDonald had to try a lot of Crunchwraps that day. He took one bite for each take. Fortunately, he liked the taste.
When he came home, he couldn't talk to anyone about the commercial until it aired. He told everyone he went to LA for the "documentary."
"It was fun. It was an experience. I'm in contact with a few of the other Ronalds now. It was just an amazing experience," McDonald said. "I just shake my head every time I see that ad on television. I say did I really do that?"
In case you're wondering, McDonald also likes a Big Mac every now and then.
