McFadden Urges Richards Not to Run
By RACHEL BARNHART | firstname.lastname@example.org
City Councilman Adam McFadden says there's been a lot of peacemaking in the Democratic Party over the past few days. He's a supporter of City Council President Lovely Warren, who defeated the party-endorsed Democratic mayor in Tuesday's primary.
"We have to unify the party and I think that's the responsibility of (party chair) Joe Morelle and Lovely because if she becomes mayor, she becomes the elected official who's leader of the party," McFadden said. "I think that also the people that are on the other side, I don't think Lovely should go to them. They should go to her. She won. Winners don't go to the other side and ask for support."
During an appearance on News 8 First at 4, we asked McFadden if there's a racial divide among city voters. The results indicated Mayor Tom Richards won primarily white neighborhoods.
"I don't think there's a racial divide in voting," McFadden said. "I think when you are a candidate you tend to work your base and try to solidify that and sometimes you try to unify it to get as many people of that base out as possible. I think it's more that than anything. You tend to go where you're strongest and make sure you shore that up."
McFadden does not believe Richards should continue to campaign.
"My opinion is no. I don't think he should. I think it would divide the party and split the city a little bit. I don't think we need to go through that. Also, when you spent the amount of money he spent and lose by the percentage points that he lost by, one has to question whether he has a base to continue on in the first place."
Would McFadden get a job in a Warren City Hall?
"I represent the people in the city and I hope to continue to do that," McFadden said. "If i'm offered something, depending on what it is, it might be hard to turn down. I can't say I will or won't but I just know my heart."
