24th Annual Heart Walk This Weekend

- Rochester, NY - "Five years ago my mom passed away, and I remember how heartbroken I was," remembers Tammy Miller, this year's Lifestyle Change Award winner.

That was all it took for Tammy to realize she needed to make a change.

"I have a teenage daughter and I came to the realization that I don't want  her to feel that way, and she's a teenager," says Miller. "So I took the steps to become healthier and this is now a way of life for me, because I need to be here for her."

Tammy was diagnosed with Type II diabetes.  She started working with a trainer who encouraged her to eat healthy, and she started to lose weight.

"I just kept going and kept setting more goals and achieving them until I achieved my ultimate goal - being off diabetes medicine," says Miller.

Because of that, she is this year's American Heart Association's "Lifestyle Change Award" winner, which will be presented to her at this year's Heart Walk on Saturday.

"We leave out on Court Street. We make our way over to the river path so it's a great walk," says Lisa Fawcett, Executive Leadership Member and Cooper Vision employee.  "Doors open at 8am and we'll have breakfast, healthy food so you can join us for that.  We'll have photo booths, biometrics screenings."

It's a fun, family-friendly event, and for some, it may be those first steps toward a healthier life.

"I'm just gonna keep going on, exercising, eating right," says Miller. "It's always a constant battle. I'm actually doing the Tough Mudder this year, at my age!"

Registration opens at 8am on Saturday, with opening ceremonies at 9:45 and the walk starts at 10.
